The (HSE) has launched a campaign to reduce the number of slips, trips and falls in the UK as it has revealed statistics showing that they are the most common cause of major injuries in British workplaces.
Winter Months "See More Accidental But Fatal Fires"
Accidental, fatal residential property fires occur more often in winter, between November-January, the London Fire Brigade has reported.
Such fires have fallen year on year; however, the colder months prove to witness the highest numbers of fatal, accidental fires, which the brigade said could be attributed to the fact that more time is spent cooking hot food, using heaters and lighting candles.
The figures also revealed that over half the people who died in such fires did not have a working smoke alarm, while the same percentage of individuals who die in accidental fires are over the age of 60.
Smoking materials caused 35 per cent of fatal house fires, followed by heating appliances (14 per cent) and cooking appliances (12 per cent).
Andy Hickmott, London Fire Brigade assistant commissioner for community safety, said: "Cigarettes that have been carelessly disposed of cause the deaths of several Londoners each year - I can't stress enough how important it is to put your cigarette out properly."
Residential property owners should minimise the risk of deaths from fire by installing fully working smoke alarms which are regularly tested.
