ABI: Motorists on Mobile Phones Biggest Threat
Motorists who use mobile telephones while behind the wheel are the "biggest menace" on the UK's roads, a new report from the Association of British Drivers (ABI) has said.
Over 70 per cent of people believe such drivers are most likely to cause an accident, followed by young male motorists (45 per cent) and those who do not have insurance (34 per cent).
Almost three-quarters of respondents claimed they would like insurers to be able to check driving licences for motoring convictions.
The survey also found that 15 per cent of women are worried about being injured as a passenger, compared to seven per cent of men.
Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, said: "To protect honest customers, insurers are currently discussing with government whether they would be able to check for relevant motoring convictions and endorsements."
