Apprentice Legislation will come into effect in April
Employers who take on apprentices will soon have to adhere to a new law which has been passed by the government, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has announced.
The Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009 contains a number of responsibilities which employers must adhere to, such as giving employees the legal right to ask for time off work to train.
A phased introduction of the law will be put in place, with employees in larger businesses coming under its remit from April 2010 and then all employees the following April.
It is hoped by the government that the law will encourage one in five young people to undertake an apprenticeship by 2020.
"The new legislation will also introduce new flexibilities to help individuals access training and ensure that the standard of training available remains high." - Skills Minister, Kevin Brennan
