New HSE campaign to reduce 'preventable' slips, trips and falls
The (HSE) has launched a campaign to reduce the number of slips, trips and falls in the UK as it has revealed statistics showing that they are the most common cause of major injuries in British workplaces.
Working Drivers 'Should Be More Familiar with Highway Code'
There is room for improvement in terms of how much knowledge working drivers have of the rules of the road, according to Roddy Graham, commercial director at Leasedrive Velo Group. Mr Graham responded to new figures published by the organisation that showed some drivers lack familiarity with some aspects of the Highway Code.
For example, it was found that 48 per cent of company drivers have read the guidelines since passing their driving test. In addition, 55 per cent failed to identify the safe distance from the car in front of them on the road, while 26 per cent did not know that 70 mph was the speed limit on dual carriageways.
However, 90 per cent of respondents correctly stated that they should take a break every two hours.
Commenting, Mr Graham said this could be improved by a refresher of the code.
"With around 200 road deaths and serious injuries every week involving someone driving at-work, clearly that is a good enough incentive…to become more familiar with the rules of the road," he remarked.
Fleet managers should ensure their employees are refreshed in the Highway Code and other road laws so that they drive as safe as possible, reducing the risk of an accident.
