Health & Safety
Being Safe is Always Best
With its largely itinerant workforce, construction is a complex industry in
which the task of maintaining acceptable levels of health and safety is always a
challenge.
Health and safety is constantly at the top of the agenda and much is
being done to address the industry's failings and cut the risk of injury or
death on site.
Once it was a simple matter of legislating for every eventuality, a futile task.
Rules and regulations forbidding one activity or compulsorily enforcing another
cannot cover all eventualities and can quickly become oppressive and
counterproductive. Today's approach is more subtle, using persuasion and
psychology to tackle the behavioural factors that lie at the root of hazardous
activities. January 2008
